The annual Senior Olympics was held in Port Hedland on 26 September. A fierce but friendly battle ensued between long running opponents, Broome and Port Hedland Day Centre clients.

The Senior Olympics first began in Broome in 1992; it has alternated between the two locations for the past twenty two years. The event was officially opened and closed by Port Hedland Mayor, Kelly Howlett.

Competitors took part in sticky ball, coits, tennis ball in a box and the ever popular indoor bowls. Port Hedland were the overall victors, stealing the trophy from last year’s winners, Broome.

Both teams proudly wore their t-shirts which were generously donated. A sub branch of Woodside provided the Broome shirts and Mayor Kelly Howlett kindly supplied the shirts for the Port Hedland team.

Port Hedland Team Leader, Alison Mathews said the highlight of the event was the camaraderie. “It didn’t actually matter who won, we all came together and really enjoyed each other’s company and had a lot of fun.”
