Campaign for carers
Posted by on August 2, 2012

Public awareness of the enormous role played by carers in our society is to get a boost following the launch of a new federal government campaign.

The Care Aware program, which was launched on Wednesday (August 1), is intended to recognise the efforts of the 2.6 million Australians who provide unpaid care and support to family and friends, the health and ageing department said in a statement.

The campaign would support those who provided full- or part-time unpaid personal care and assistance to people with disabilities, medical conditions, mental illness, frailty due to age, and individuals with alcohol and drug issues.

A new Care Aware website provides information about caring, and allows carers to share their stories in an online forum.

More than $1.6 million dollars has been provided by the federal government to fund the campaign, which is an initiative under the National Carer Strategy.
