(SCC) staff member and Kalgoorlie local Faye Landers was invited to attended a special high tea event hosted by the WA Department of Health to mark her 50th year of being a registered nurse. In attendance were fellow long serving nurses and midwives who were acknowledged for their dedication and contribution to the community.

WA Health’s Acting Chief Nurse and Midwifery Officer, Brett Evans, thanked the nurses and midwives for improving the health and wellbeing of people across the community.

“Despite the many changes in nursing, one thing remained constant throughout – the value of nurses and midwives in the community,” he said.

Faye has worked as a Registered Nurse at Victoria Park Nursing Home and Hostel in Kalgoorlie for the past 11 years and currently provides relief support at the facility. She knew from a young age that nursing was the profession for her.

“I always wanted to be a nurse. My younger sister would get fed up with me because doctors and nurses was the only game I ever wanted to play and she had to be the patient every time.”

Over the last 50 years Faye has nursed in a range of different locations throughout Kalgoorlie including hospitals, doctors’ surgeries, aged care facilities and the community. Her extensive experience has provided her with a wealth of knowledge and makes her an excellent mentor to staff and new graduates at Victoria Park Nursing Home.

Victoria Park Nursing Home Facility Manager, Jenni Lys who has known Faye for 30 years says she’s a cherished member of the team.

“Faye is a very well respected nurse and provides immeasurable support to our staff and residents. Her gentle but professional persona adds strength to our team and comforts those she cares for.”

2014 is a year of celebrations for Faye as she also recently marked her 50th golden wedding anniversary with husband Brian. The couple have a large family of six children, 15 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

SCC would like to congratulate Faye on her remarkable achievement and thank her for her many years of dedicated service.
