Sue Pantano, Key Teacher of Literacy and Year Two at Our Lady of Mt Carmel Primary School  has developed a reading program in conjunction with Assistant Principal, Rosemary Paparella, to assist parents to feel comfortable and confident to help their children to read more fluently and with improved comprehension.

The goal was to also implement this program into the classroom with the assistance of reading volunteers. The increasing need for both parents to work means parent volunteers have become extremely scarce. To overcome this issue, Ms Paparella approached the residents at neighbouring Foley Village to request assistance with the reading program.

Five residents responded to the request including Jean Scarle who is a recently retired teacher. Jean currently volunteers five days a week and has found it very rewarding. “It’s a great initiative, I’ve really enjoyed seeing the student I’ve been working with progress and gain confidence in reading out loud.”

Joan O’Grady who has ten grandchildren is particularly enjoying the program because reading is her favourite past time. “It’s great to be able to help students to experience the joy of reading.”

Ms Paparella is extremely pleased that all parties are benefiting from the experience. “I support the theory that it takes a village to raise a child, having the Foley Village residents volunteer with us helps to achieve this goal. Their assistance is invaluable and we are blessed to have such wonderful people helping us and our children,” Ms Paparella concluded.
