On Thursday 3 October Premier of Western Australia, Colin Barnett visited Southern Cross Care’s (SCC) Community Options Home in Mount Claremont.

He was accompanied by the Minister for Mental Health Helen Morton, Commissioner of Mental Health Eddie Bartnik and Director General of the Department of Health Professor Bryant Stokes.

The main purpose of the visit was to demonstrate the alternatives to long term hospitalisation for people with mental illness.  Discussion focused around the individuals who live in the house, their history with mental illness, their transition process from an institution to a home environment and the positive outcomes that had been achieved.

Southern Cross Care staff spoke to Mr Barnett about the need for a range of service options for people with mental illness in the community and the philosophy of support being psycho- social rather than clinical.  He was particularly interested in the increased involvement of families and friends since the residents had moved into SCC’s Community Options Home in Mount Claremont.
