Volunteering at Southern Cross Care

Southern Cross Care (WA) Inc.’s volunteers come from all walks of life – from retirees with a passion for enriching the lives of others, to people who cared for a family member, to teenagers who want to do something meaningful with their free time. They have one thing in common – the positive feelings they get from making a difference to someone else’s life.

Our volunteers often do not realise how much they get back from their experience. While it often is through getting a positive feeling that comes from making a difference, there are many other benefits including:

• Making new friends
• Developing new skills
• Contributing to the local community
• Learning from our elders
• Having fun

Volunteering Opportunities

Our volunteers undertake a range of roles which provide extra support to our clients and support staff in their work.

The majority of volunteer roles are in residential aged care (nursing homes) but there are limited opportunities available in our dementia-specific respite centres and mental health program.

We have a range of volunteering opportunities that can enrich your life, including:

• Bus drivers and assistants
• Social visiting
• Assistance with group activities like crafts, bingo, quizzes, etc.
• Office assistance
• Pastoral care
• Supporting our therapy staff
• Bus Drivers

Not all volunteer opportunities will be available at all sites and we work with you to identify the best match for you.

Volunteer opportunities are available predominantly during the day on weekdays, although occasional weekend opportunities may be available at some sites.  Most people volunteer 1-2 hours either weekly or fortnightly.

Pastoral Care Volunteering

Volunteer Pastoral Carers work alongside paid staff to extend the range and effectiveness of the pastoral care program through one-on-one skilled companionship visits to allocated residents.  Additional training and supervision is provided.

Pastoral Activities volunteers deliver or assist with religious activities like leading hymn singing or bible reading sessions, assisting clergy during church services, etc.   Groups of volunteers (e.g. church groups) can also propose new activities and deliver them as a group.

If you are interested in Pastoral Care volunteering, please first contact our Head of Pastoral Care – Ian Simms on isimms@scrosswa.org.au and he will contact you to discuss the possibilities.
